just had our choir interhall competition this afternoon. we got 1st runner up, the whole hall cheered for us, but deep down inside, we knew we did not deserve it. it was just the opposite to what we experienced last year, which was that we got 4th place when in fact we felt that we already tried our best and gave it our all. this year, instead, we were given glory that was not ours to take.
after our performance, we were pretty disappointed with ourselves despite the gruelling practices especially for the past week. practice was tiring but necessary. most of the times, I felt that we were practicing but we just lacked the soul to really sing from our hearts.
during yesterday’s practice, we were beginning to show signs of really conveying a message to the audience and our music was beginning to flow. however, we seemed to have lost that spark on stage. we were thinking we would get 3rd AT MOST. with a big spoonful of luck.
we were taken by surprise when we were announced to be in 2nd place. it brought joy to the other hallmates, but we were in fact stunned because we did not expect it at all. I, myself, felt not worthy of the prize because i wasn’t very very into the songs until probably the very last week. when i started to forget that choir actually took up a lot of my time and actually immerse myself in the two songs that we were singing.
but i really, really thank God for letting me sing choir for two years. I have learned so much in terms of how to sing in a “choir” voice (aka headtone), sing with phrasing, control the dynamics of my voice, listen to other parts for harmony etc etc. and more than that, i realised that a choir is an instrument by itself. it needs every part and every voice to sing, not as an individual, but as a group of voices conveying a single message, proceeding towards a single goal. it’s amazing to hear the richness of male + female voices, especially when you are part of the amazing experience.
i am not sure if i will be still joining hall choir next year, but i’m definitely sure that this will not be my last choir performance. let God lead the way and we’ll see if I can still sing choir in the future =)
by the way an interesting TEDtalk on music and passion. Enjoy!!!
Benjamin Zander’s view on success (as a conductor):
It’s not about wealth and fame and power, it’s about how many shining eyes i have around me.

Thank God I’m much better now. Got my emotions all sorted out and hopefully things will remain the way they are =)
We’re approaching the end of Urogenital Block and I can’t believe I’ve been here for only 1 month! Well it actually seemed like summer holidays were a long time ago and all I have been doing lately is study and also doing a bunch of non-studying stuff. Like hanging out with medic juniors and seniors, hall and floor stuff, Caduceus meetings and editing HealthEx articles. a bit churr but still very manageable.
Oh yeah, since I’m considered a “current” (Yr 2) student, we will be “visited” by Yr 1 freshmen as part of their orientation. But since I didn’t go for hall orientation, I will only be visited by freshmen on my floor. But we have 20+ freshmen this year. o.O and the min time per visit is 45 mins. Kinda tired lately but talking to juniors makes me feel like I’m part of the floor =)
by the way my primary school bestie posted one of her covers on Youtube!!! LIKE it if u really like it cause this is part of a “Share the Love” competition! enjoy =)

Saw this video posted by my friend on facebook just now.
Two innocent kids (they look like twins!) dancing to the tune of “The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars.
Cute, eh?
Well, it was, initially, when they were bouncing to “today I don’t feel like doing anything”, but once they got to the line “get a really nice girl, have some really nice s*x”, I was slightly taken aback that the parents didn’t really filter what the kids sang. I mean it’s obvious that they didn’t know what it meant, but it just made me uncomfortable.
I mean to me, disseminated information is safer than undisclosed ones. It’s better to explain to a kid what that means rather than just let them find out themselves. But then again, these kids are way too young for “the talk”, so I wouldn’t even let them listen to the lyrics of the song. This song is so cute, but then it’s like 18-PG rated! >.<
If I were a parent, I would just stick to letting my kids watch Glee.
See? The kids are STILL cute.
