Good food in HK!

This is a rough guide to eating around HK. Did it so that next time people ask me where to eat in HK, I can just send them this link! kekeke

Dim Sum
1. 新興食家 (Sun Hing Restaurant)
More popularly known as “3am dimsum” among HKU students because it opens at 3am and that’s when it is really crowded too. Usually it will be those living at nearby student halls or those who just came back from clubbing at LKF (Lan Kwai Fong. will talk more about this in places of interest in HK)

Unfortunately I don’t have much pics from this restaurant so I’m stealing it from Charlene’s facebook profile pic!

If you come here, remember to try 流沙包 (lao sha bao). It looks like a normal albeit smaller sized bao, but inside is like a warm, creamy surprise! I’m not very sure what are the contents, but it tastes like butter, egg and sugar mixed together, and remember to prepare tissue, or not the lao sha will drip everywhere! Very fattening but very yummy.

I tried a similar one in Canton-i, but it was a bit more expensive and not as delectable. And the one in HK is white on the outside, not purple.

All the other dimsums are ok, but this shop is pretty small and congested, unlike those dimsum restaurants in hotels/shopping complexes. The price is reasonable too, eg, 10 or 11 HKD per basket of dim sum.

It is located at Sai Wan in Hong Kong Island. I’m not sure if there are any buses directly leading there, but here’s  rough idea of how to get there:

- Exit Central MTR station at Exit A1. Turn left, walk straight. You will see shops like Yoshinoya and McDonalds on your left. Look for bus 54 or 55 (Green roof) minibus on your right.
- Bus 55/54 will take you to the terminal station, Queen Mary Hospital. (Bus 54 takes lots of detours so I would recommend taking bus 55.)
- After getting down at Queen Mary Hospital, walk to the opposite side of the bridge. Wait for minibus (green roof) no. 28.
- Take this bus straight to the terminal station. It will bring you to Sun Hing’s doorstep.

Desserts
1. Froyo (Frozen Yoghurt)
Froyo is extremely popular in HK. There are a couple of famous Froyo shops like Yo Mama, Crumbs etc. I think all are good! But I personally like Crumbs the most. Try their signature House Crumbs.

Yo Mama in City Super, Times Square (to get to Times Square, just take the MTR to Causeway Bay and look for the exit that says “Times Square”)

Sorry for the bad resolution! Taken with my iPod touch >.<

Crumbs. There are, as usual, several of its branches in HK. Doesnt matter which one you go to, they’ll be equally good! =)

2. 五代同糖

Green tea shaved ice dessert! (sorry if it sounds weird, I came up with that name myself >.<) and creme brulee (below)

Price is reasonable, and most importantly it’s very easy to find. Scattered throughout HK. For details check this out.

3 石磨坊

My personal favourite! And Charlene’s too! The pic above is something like 炖蛋, very tau foo fa-ish with and some egg in it! OMG soooo yummy! *salivates* The yellow deco on top is actually butter! *salivates again*

Some mango + ice. Thing. (sorry I can’t remember its name! maybe it’s called ice tower or something)

For details check this out.

4. Lucky Dessert
This place is famous for its durian-based desserts! They have all durian stuff, from pancakes, to pudding, to ice-shavings…. *drools*

This is called 榴莲飘香(lau lin piu heung)。Has similar texture to 杨枝甘露 (yeung ji gum lou). Very creamy and even has those durian fibres in it!!! Super authentic (though it lacks the bitterness found in Malaysian durians >.<)

THIS IS ALSO A MUST TRY!!! Check out details here.

Western
1. Red Ant Restaurant

Well, the first time we went was when there was a dessert promotion, 65 HKD for all you can eat desserts! and trust me they were G.O.O.D.

Aptly named 心太软 (Literal translation: Heart too soft.) Has deep, luscious chocolate liquid inside!!!

Er, sorry, can’t remember what it’s called, should be apple something. Sorry!!! T__T
Anyway the food there is pretty good! Some dishes can be as low as 40 HKD (this is the standard price for fine dining HK). And it’s good, too!

Check this out for more details.

2. Simply Life
Actually I don’t have pics for this restaurant, but it has a very nice ambience. But a little more pricey, around 100 HKD for the cheapest thing on the menu. But the food IS good! =) Check out the details here.

All-Day Breakfast
1. Australian Dairy Co.
OMG I cannot recommend this place enough! This is a MUST GO!!!

Long queue outside, as usual. But you’ll definitely get in within 2 minutes! THAT’s what I call efficiency! (The waiters inside will give you stares, though, if u spend too long savouring your meal. They just want you to pay, eat and leave) This shop is like the epitome of HK-ers fast paced lifestyle.

Expect your food to arrive within 1 minute. Like seriously. Anyway just try out their 炖蛋 and also 火腿通粉 (macaroni and bacon ) and 面包炒蛋 (bread & eggs). You can choose to have the eggs fried/scrambled. And also this shop is famous for its milk tea!!! MUST GO!!! For details check out here.

2. The Flying Pan
This place is pretty awesome too! Serves all-day breakfast (similar to Australian Dairy) and has plenty of choices! But this place is also quite pricey, around 100 HKD per dish, but it’s a very big plate! Definitely ok to share.

For details check out here.

Street Food
1. 利强记北角鸡蛋仔 (gai dan zai)

This is also a MUST TRY!! Well honestly I think it doesn’t really matter where you get the gai dan zai, you just simply have to try it in HK! They’re actually pretty easy to find, but this is apparently a famous shop for it.

You should also try their curry fishballs (咖哩鱼蛋). For more details check out here.

Misc
1. Charlie Brown Cafe
Honestly the food here is a bit overpriced and not that amazing. But just decided to recommend this place if you would like to take nice pics!!! =)

For details check out here.

That’s all I have got after one year hopping around Hong Kong! Unfortunately I don’t have very active tastebuds, hence the short list. And mind you, my recommendations may not live up to your expectations so do more research if you’re coming to HK for the food!!! Please recommend more eateries if you’ve found any good ones (so I can try them out myself hehe ^^

Feel free to contact me, too, if you need help navigating around HK! =)
